Matthew Wykoff, a career and technical education (CTE) Project Lead the Way Engineering instructor at Ballantyne Ridge High School, was named one of 24 finalists for the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) 2027 Burroughs Wellcome Fund NC CTE Teacher of the Year Award.
This recognition places Wykoff among an outstanding group of district and charter school educators from across North Carolina, each recognized for their excellence in career and technical education pathways and their commitment to fostering student success.
Wykoff, a 20-year CMS educator, said he’s honored and grateful to be selected as a finalist, and shares the recognition with his students, colleagues, administrators, industry partners and family who “believe in the life-changing power of career and technical education.”
“Every student deserves the opportunity to discover their purpose, develop meaningful skills and see how their unique talents can make a difference in their communities,” said Wykoff. “Career and Technical Education bridges the gap between learning and life by helping students solve real problems, build meaningful relationships and prepare for careers that strengthen North Carolina’s future.”
NCCAT, in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the North Carolina Association for Career and Technical Education, developed the CTE Teacher of the Year award to honor outstanding CTE educators, encourage teacher leadership and emphasize the importance of CTE instruction in North Carolina public schools.
The 24 finalists will attend a week of professional development from Oct. 26-30. The winner will be announced during a recognition event on Oct. 29, at the Embassy Suites in Concord, North Carolina.
“What makes Mr. Wykoff so amazing isn't just the incredible, real-world skills he brings into the classroom,” said Ballantyne Ridge High Principal Michael Miliote. “It’s the way he connects with every kid who walks through his door. He makes learning truly matter, and he builds the kind of relationships that students remember for a lifetime.”

Wykoff said the future of North Carolina is “being built in our classrooms, workshops and communities,” and he’s optimistic about what lies ahead when public and private partnerships work together.
“My hope is that we continue to create learning experiences where curiosity is encouraged, innovation is expected, character matters and every student — regardless of their background — knows they have value and a place to contribute,” said Wykoff. “Together, we are not simply preparing students for careers and post-secondary opportunities; we are preparing thoughtful leaders, skilled professionals and engaged citizens who will improve our future.”
